Figure work has been part of European and Ottoman pipe carving for as long as meerschaum has been worked, and it makes the same demands as any portrait: anatomy that reads correctly at small scale, and surfaces that hold their modelling once the stone hardens.
The mermaid is the most frequent subject here, usually worked so that the tail wraps the bowl and the figure reclines along the shank — a composition that suits the shape of a pipe unusually well. Other pieces are straightforward figure studies in high relief.
As elsewhere in the catalogue, each piece is individually carved, photographed unretouched from every angle, and measured by hand on enquiry. These pieces are intended for adult collectors.
Common questions
- Are these pieces suitable as gifts?
- They are adult subjects, so that is a judgement for the buyer. The atelier can suggest alternatives from other collections if you would prefer a neutral subject.
