Sea foam, from the earth.

Meerschaum means “sea foam” in German, a name earned by its weight and its colour, not its origin. It comes out of the ground, in seams that run under the plateau around Eskişehir.

What is Turkish block meerschaum?

Block meerschaum is a natural hydrous magnesium silicate mined in seams around Eskişehir in Türkiye. Freshly dug it is soft enough to carve with hand tools, and it hardens as it dries, which is what allows the deep, undercut relief work seen throughout this catalogue. It is porous and light, and it colours gradually with use.

Block meerschaum is cut from solid stone. Pressed meerschaum, by contrast, is made from carving dust and offcuts bound together: cheaper, heavier in the hand, and unable to hold undercut detail. Every piece in this catalogue is carved from block.

You are buying from the people who carved it.

White Earth Atelier is the workshop of M. Bahri Tüner in Eskişehir, Türkiye. The carving specialists who work there shape every piece individually, and they take commissions. There is no distributor between you and the bench. Inquiries are answered by the atelier itself.

Bring a subject. Leave with an heirloom.

A commission can begin from a reference piece, a shape, a theme or a functional requirement: a particular chamber depth, a filter fitting, a subject that means something to you. The atelier confirms what is possible in stone before any work begins.

What is block meerschaum?
Block meerschaum is a natural mineral, hydrous magnesium silicate, mined in seams around Eskişehir in Türkiye. It is soft enough to carve when freshly dug and hardens as it dries, which is why it holds fine relief detail. Genuine block meerschaum is cut from solid stone, unlike pressed meerschaum, which is made from bonded offcuts.
Where are White Earth Atelier pipes made?
