Animal Meerschaum Pipes
Fifty carved creatures, each cut from its own block: eagles and lions, elephants, bulls, owls, horses, dolphins and boar. Subjects are often chosen to suit the nodule rather than the other way round, which is why no two pieces in this collection repeat.

Animal carving is the largest sculptural group in the catalogue and the one where the relationship between block and subject is most direct. A carver reading a nodule decides what it can become — its size, its soundness, the way its mass runs — and the subject follows from that. It is the practical reason a workshop ends up with fifty animals and no duplicates.
The range runs from heads worked in high relief on an otherwise conventional bowl, through to pieces where the whole form is the animal. Some carry secondary detail — floral work, a claw, a snake wound around the shank — cut from the same block rather than applied to it.
Figural work of this kind colours unevenly with use, because relief carving means the wall thickness varies across the piece. On an animal carving that is generally welcome: the patina deepens first in the recesses and emphasises the modelling. It is a characteristic of the form, not a fault.
Every piece is photographed from all sides so the modelling can be judged in the round — particularly the back and underside, which is where hurried figural work tends to stop. Measurements are confirmed individually on enquiry; heavier sculptural pieces in this collection are hand pipes rather than clenchers.
Common questions
- Are the animal pipes moulded or carved?
- Carved by hand from solid block meerschaum, one piece at a time. That is why no two are identical, including pieces depicting the same animal.
- Will a carved animal pipe colour evenly?
- Usually not, because relief carving means uneven wall thickness. The patina tends to deepen in the recesses first, which emphasises the carving.
