Mythological Meerschaum Pipes
Pegasus, Bacchus, the unicorn — subjects from myth carved in block meerschaum. These pieces sit between portraiture and animal sculpture, and several combine a figure with the vine and grape relief that traditionally accompanies it.

Mythological subjects have a long presence in Eskişehir carving, and they suit the material for a straightforward reason: meerschaum takes the kind of flowing detail — hair, drapery, wings, vine — that these subjects are made of.
Bacchus, usually shown bearded and wreathed, is often carved with grape and vine work running around the bowl, so the ornament and the figure are part of the same idea rather than decoration added to it. Pegasus and unicorn pieces put the weight on the modelling of the head and the sweep of the mane.
Each piece is individually carved and photographed unretouched from every angle. Where the subject is a figure from myth rather than a specific historical person, no claim is made about period, school or attribution beyond what the atelier can confirm: carved by hand in Eskişehir, Türkiye.
Common questions
- Who is depicted on the Bacchus pipes?
- Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, conventionally shown bearded and wreathed with vine. The vine and grape relief on several of these pieces belongs to the same subject.
